Pysanky (pysanka = singular) is an ancient art that predates Christianity in the Ukraine region. The word pysanky is from the word pysaty, which means to write. Pysanky are not painted, they are written. Each motif has a meaning, as the designs are written the pysanka can tell a story or reflect a prayer or wish.

This ostrich egg pysanka was made on commission following suit of a similar one made on a goose egg. It depicts the Russian folk tale about the Firebird.
