Built: 1808, as part of President Thomas Jefferson’s coastal defense initiatives. Named After: James Jackson, a Revolutionary War hero and later governor of Georgia. War of 1812: Used to defend Savannah from potential British attacks. Civil War: Served as a Confederate stronghold until 1864, when Union forces took Savannah during Sherman’s March to the Sea.
